The very popular horse mackerel fishing method in Japan is primarily used for fishing in the port area. It mainly uses soft bait and is equipped with different types/grams of jig head strategy. The successful “Aji Game” consists of four factors, that is, location 40%, fishing tackle 40%, weather 10%, and technology 10%, the best fishing time is the dawn, dusk, and night. The main fishing spot is a levee with high seawater flow and a certain depth of water, places with street lights are the best fishing spot for night fishing. Horse mackerel is phototactic, and places with lights will gather them together. The fish in the port area is generally about 15 to 20 cm.

Every year from June to July, from October to December, it is the time when the mackerel and small migratory fishes come to the shore, but this period is slightly different every year. Basically, the crowds in the port are usually the sign of the docking of these mackerels. The amount of fish is depends on whether there is a good tide or not. From what have been mentioned above, the horse mackerel is not a predictable migratory fish; and they do not stay near the shore for too long. So, for those who like Lure can look at the following suggestions to improve the chance of catching these fish.

Suggested Equipment:
Fishing rod: 5-7 feet of solid tip fishing rod for horse mackerel or bass
Reel: 500-2000S shallow wire spinning reel
Line: Carbon fiber fishing line (0.1-0.3mm) or PE line (0.2-0.4mm)
Bait: 0.1 to 1.5g Jig head with 1 to 2 inches slim worm

The HR's RockMaster 682UL fishing rod has a solid tip connected with a tubular design. This setup can give an excellent feedback and operability on the ultra-lightweight Jig, which is something a pure tubular tip cannot achieve. It is a fast action with an outstanding responsiveness. A respectful casting distance can be achieved when pairing with HR Valley Hunter X4 pink PE line #0.4 and 0.1 to1.5 grams of baits.

In terms of the foraging of the horse mackerel, they hide in the dark and feast on the edge where the lights and shadows meet. They hunt for shrimps, crabs, and plankton. They generally swim at a certain level of depth, once you can get a hang of it, it wouldn’t be hard to get a good result. Generally speaking, with the right water and wind condition, choose the baits that sink slower.

Basically, in the wharfs of northern Taiwan where a large number of horse mackerel comes to the shore, the traditional fishing method would always use a large amount of baits to attract these fish. Under this human factor, the fish are always going to forage on the surface.  Relatively speaking, when leveraging these methods which have been mentioned above will greatly increase the chance of catching fish.

The technique is very simple. When the bait is falling down, it is a perfect timing to bait. So after casting the rod, it is not rushed to operate. Let it fall slowly, and close the line, it will be more obvious when horse mackerel is biting the bait. A technique suggestion is fishing flick shake and changing speed depends on the bite condition when it sink to a certain depth, and then let the bait fall continually. In addition, horse mackerel usually bite very lightly on the bait, and they suck the bait into their mouths. In this way, the mouth structure of horse mackerels is very thin and can be easily damaged. Therefore, when the fish is hooked, the fishing line should be let out a bit and adjust the pulling force along with it. That will cushion that instant pulling force from the fish so that the mouth of the fish will not be damaged, which will greatly increase the chance of landing the fish. There are also opportunities to run into different small migratory, such as round scads, mackerel, island mackerel, bali sardinella, and etc.

The horse mackerel usually will not stay too long when it approaches to the shore. Come and check out this super easy and fun way of fishing. AJI GAME, GO!
